THE GREEN IT ISSUE

A report submitted to Congress Aug. 2 by the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star program outlined the energy challenges facing the IT industry and possible steps that can be taken to alleviate some of the problems.

According to the report the technology sector is seeing power consumption rise rapidly. The EPA estimated that the IT industry consumed about 61 billion kilowatt-hours in 2006—about 1.5 percent of the total electricity consumed in the United States—at a cost of about $4.5 billion.

Power consumption in the industry could nearly double by 2011, the report said. Federal servers and data centers accounted for about 10 percent—or 6 billion kwh—at an electrical cost of about $450 million.

The cost of energy is rapidly emerging as the largest single contributor to service costs, and environmental and climate impact. The reduction in infrastructure footprint has not been accompanied by a similar reduction in power consumption.

Energy saving ideas are expected to be the most significant best practice developments in 2008. The concepts of energy related impact and power scorecards have already been added to the Lean Service Management training curriculum.

ITSMI is leading the green service management initiative in the US through chairing of the 'Green Community' hosted by the Service Management Institute, an organization chartered to develop meaningful, platform and vendor neutral standards, operations and management methods, and good practices to improve the energy efficient performance of service provider organizations.
